What is the function of myoglobin in muscle fibers?

Muscle fibers contain a red-colored oxygen-storing pigment called myoglobin. Myoglobin helps to store oxygen, which can then be utilized by the mitochondria in the muscles for ATP production. The Skeletal system is grouped into two main divisions - the axial skeleton which includes the bones that make up the central axis of the body such as the skull, spinal column, rib cage and the appendicular skeleton which includes bones of the upper and lower limbs and the bones that attach the limbs to the axial skeleton.Muscle contraction is initiated by a signal sent by the central nervous system (CNS) via a motor neuron.The junction between a motor neuron and the sarcolemma of the muscle fibre is called the neuromuscular junction or motor-end plate.When a neural signal reaches the neuromuscular junction, it releases a neurotransmitter (Acetylcholine) which generates an action potential in the sarcolemma.
