COMEDK2015ChemistryAmines
A mixture of methylamine and dimethyl amine is given to you. The reagents used to separate the components of the mixture are
Options
- ACHCl ₃ and HCl
- BC ₆ H ₅ SO ₂ Cl and KOH
- CC ₆ H ₅ SO ₂ Cl and HCl
- DCHCl ₃ and KOH
Correct answer
B. C ₆ H ₅ SO ₂ Cl and KOH
Step-by-step solution
A mixture of methylamine ( 1^ amine) and dimethylamine ( 2^ amine) can KOH be separated with the help of C ₆ H ₅ SO ₂ Cl and (Hinsberg's method). Methylamine will form N-methylbenzene - sulphonamide, which is soluble in KOH. Dimethylamine will form N , N-dimethylbenzenesulphonamide which is insoluble in KOH.
