(CH₃)₃CO^- is a bulky base. With bulky bases, E2 elimination is favoured over substitution, and the less hindered (Hofmann) product is preferred. The substrate is CH₃-CH(CH₃)-CH₂Cl . The only -hydrogen available (on the carbon bearing CH₃ ) is abstracted by the bulky base, giving elimination. The major product is CH₃-C(CH₃)=CH₂ (2-methylpropene), formed by E2 elimination of HCl.
