The general formula of the compound formed when a metal (M) of group 1 reacts with non-metal (X) of group 16 is

Options

  1. AM X₆
  2. BM₂ X₃
  3. CM X₂
  4. DM₂ X

Correct answer

D. M₂ X

Step-by-step solution

Group 1 elements (M) have electronic configuration of outermost shell as n s^1 and the group 16 elements (X) have electronic configuration of outermost shell as n s^2 n p^4 , where ' n ' is the principal quantum number of outermost shell. M is strong reducing agent and can easily lose its 1 electron to acquire the stable electronic configuration of noble gas. The group 16 elements require 2 electrons to complete their octet, so each X atom will bind with two M atoms. Therefore, M₂ X compound is formed.
