Assertion: Ozone is destroyed by C F C s in the upper stratosphere. Reason: Ozone holes increase the amount of U V radiation reaching the earth.

Options

  1. AAssertion and reason are correct, but the reason is not the explanation for the assertion.
  2. BThe assertion is false, but the reason is correct.
  3. CAssertion and reason are incorrect.
  4. DAssertion and reason are both correct, and the reason is the correct explanation for the assertion.

Correct answer

A. Assertion and reason are correct, but the reason is not the explanation for the assertion.

Step-by-step solution

When CFCs react with ozone, then it breaks the molecule of ozone gas which results in ozone layer depletion. Ozone layer protect us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiations coming from the sun. Thus, ozone holes increase the amount of UV radiation reaching the earth. The upper stratosphere consists of ozone O 3 , which protect us from harmful ultraviolet U V radiations coming from sun.
