Given below are two statements :
Statement-I: The reactance of an ac circuit is zero. It is possible that the circuit contains a capacitor and an inductor.
Statement-II: In ac circuit, the average power delivered by the source never becomes zero.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

Options

  1. ABoth Statement I and Statement II are true.
  2. BBoth Statement I and Statement II are false.
  3. CStatement I is true but Statement II is false.
  4. DStatement I is false but Statement II is true.

Correct answer

C. Statement I is true but Statement II is false.

Step-by-step solution

The reactance of a circuit containing a capacitor and an inductor is given by X=XL−XC=\omegaL−1\omegaCX = {X}_{L} - {X}_{C} = \omegaL - \dfrac{1}{\omegaC}. An AC circuit has zero reactance at resonance, i.e., when, XL=XC{X}_{L} = {X}_{C}. So, first statement is true.

The power consumption in an AC circuit is zero when circuit contains only inductance or capacitance since average power consumed in a cycle is zero for inductance or capacitance. So, second statement is false.
