What are (X ) and (Y ) in the following reactions?

Options

  1. A( array cc X & Y Conc. HNO ₃ & H ₂ SO ₄ ( SO ₃ ) array )
  2. B( array cc X & Y Conc. HNO ₃+ Conc. H ₂ SO ₄ / 333 ~K & H ₂ SO ₄ ( SO ₃ ) array )
  3. C( array cc X & Y NaNO ₂ / HCl & H ₂ SO ₄ array )
  4. D( array cc X & Y Dil. HNO ₃ & SO ₃ array )

Correct answer

B. ( array cc X & Y Conc. HNO ₃+ Conc. H ₂ SO ₄ / 333 ~K & H ₂ SO ₄ ( SO ₃ ) array )

Step-by-step solution

Benzene reacts with conc. ( HNO ₃+ ) conc. ( H ₂ SO ₄ / ) (333 ~K (X) ) to give nitrobenzene. This reaction is known as nitration. Whereas when, it reacts with sulphuric acid it give benzene sulphonic acid and the reaction is known as sulphonation.
