When salt BA is treated with Conc. H ₂ SO ₄ reddish brown gas is liberated. The aqueous solution of BA gives pale yellow precipitate with AgNO ₃ solution. Which of the following anion ( A ^- ) is present in the salt BA?

Options

  1. ACl ^-
  2. BCO ₃²⁻
  3. CSO ₄²⁻
  4. DBr ^-

Correct answer

D. Br ^-

Step-by-step solution

When a salt containing bromide ion ( Br ^- ) is treated with concentrated H ₂ SO ₄ , reddish-brown bromine gas ( Br ₂ ) is evolved due to the oxidation of bromide ions by sulphuric acid. The reaction is: 2 Br ^- + 2 H ₂ SO ₄ Br ₂ + SO ₂ + SO ₄²⁻ + 2 H ₂ O . When an aqueous solution of a bromide salt is treated with AgNO ₃ solution, a pale yellow precipitate of silver bromide ( AgBr ) is formed. The reaction is: Br ^- + Ag ^+ AgBr . Therefore, the anion A ^- present in the salt BA is Br ^- . Answer: Br ^-
