Identify the use of mixture of Ar and N ₂ from following.

Options

  1. AFor magnetic resonance imaging
  2. BFor production of lasers
  3. CTo fill in electric bulbs
  4. DTo produce low temperature for research work

Correct answer

C. To fill in electric bulbs

Step-by-step solution

The filament in an electric bulb is made using tungsten which would burn quickly when it comes in contact with the oxygen in the air. This is the reason why unreactive gases such as argon and nitrogen are used for filling an electric bulb. These gases are chemically inactive. Hence, bulbs are filled with chemically inactive Nitrogen or Argon gas in order to prevent the oxidation of tungsten filament used in the bulb.
