Given below are two statements : Statement I : The nutrient deficient water bodies lead to eutrophication. Statement II : Eutrophication leads to decrease in the level of oxygen in the water bodies. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :

Options

  1. AStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is true
  2. BBoth Statement I and Statement II are true
  3. CBoth Statement I and Statement II are false
  4. DStatement I is correct but Statement II is false

Correct answer

A. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true

Step-by-step solution

Nutrient enriched water bodies support a dense plant population, which kills animal life by depriving it of oxygen and results in subsequent loss of biodiversity. This process is called as eutrophication. So from the given statements, Statement   I is wrong. As the algae and other plants grow, they consume large amounts of oxygen through the process of respiration. As a result, the level of dissolved oxygen in the water can decrease. So Statement   II is correct.
