Primary producers are the autotrophs that produce energy, carbohydrates, through photosynthesis by capturing solar energy. Producers occupy the first trophic level having the greatest biomass or gross primary production (GPP). When energy gets transduced from producers to herbivores and to carnivores, only 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to another trophic level. Hence, producers receive the maximum energy.
