Within the hypodermis of Pinus leaf is the parenchymatous mesophyll. It is comparted and shows no differentiation into palisade and spongy tissues. It consists of thin-walled cells which contain numerous chloroplasts and abundant starch. The mesophyll thus functions as the chlorophyll bearing tissue which manufactures food for plants.
