JEE Advanced Chemistry Question (2023) — Solution

Question

Consider the following reaction scheme and choose the correct option(s) for the major products Q, R and S .

Options

  1. A.
  2. B.
  3. C.
  4. D.

Answer

B.

Step-by-step solution

Styrene on hydroboration-oxidation reaction gives a primary alcohol. It follows anti-Markonikov's rule to give alcohol from alkenes. Primary alcohols give carboxylic acids on oxidation with Jone's reagent. The alpha chloro carboxylic acid is produced on HVZ reaction of carboxylic acid produced. 2-phenyl ethanol on reaction with thionyl chloride produces 1-chloro-2-phenylethane. The chloro group is replaced with cyano group. The cyanide on hydrolysis give carboxylic acid. The carboxylic acid undergoes acylation reaction in the presence of  conc . H 2 SO 4 .
