JEE Advanced Chemistry Question (2023) — Solution

Question

The complex(es), which can exhibit the type of isomerism shown by Pt NH 3 2 Br 2 , is(are) en = H 2 NCH 2 CH 2 NH 2

Options

  1. A. Pt ( en ) ( SCN ) 2
  2. B. Zn NH 3 2 Cl 2
  3. C. Pt NH 3 2 Cl 4
  4. D. Cr ( en ) 2 H 2 O SO 4 +

Answer

D. Cr ( en ) 2 H 2 O SO 4 +

Step-by-step solution

Pt NH 3 2 Cl 2  is a square planar complex and it can exhibit geometrical isomerism. It has two isomers, cis-platin and trans-platin. The complexes  Zn NH 3 2 Cl 2   tetrahedral   and   Pt ( en ) ( SCN ) 2  does not exhibit geometrical isomerism. The octahedral complex  Pt NH 3 2 Cl 4  shows geometrical isomerism, it has two geometrical isomers cis and trans.   Cr ( en ) 2 H 2 O SO 4 +  is an octahedral complex, it is of the type  M AA 2 bc  and it can exhibit the geometrical isomerism.
