JEE Advanced Chemistry Question (2021) — Solution

Question

The correct statement(s) related to oxoacids of phosphorous is(are)

Options

  1. A. Upon heating, H 3 PO 3 undergoes disproportionation reaction to produce H 3 PO 4 and PH 3 .
  2. B. While H 3 PO 3 can act as reducing agent, H 3 PO 4 cannot.
  3. C. H 3 PO 3 is a monobasic acid.
  4. D. The H atom of P - H bond in H 3 PO 3 is not ionizable in water.

Answer

D. The H atom of P - H bond in H 3 PO 3 is not ionizable in water.

Step-by-step solution

4 H 3 PO 3 → ∆ 3 H 3 PO 4 + PH 3  (Disproportionation) Oxidation state of  ' P '  in  H 3 PO 4  is  + 5  which is maximum oxidation state of  ' P '  so  H 3 PO 4  cannot act as a reducing agent whereas  H 3 PO 3  can act as a reducing agent because the oxidation state is + 3 and it can increase upto + 5 . ⇒   H 3 PO 3 :  It is dibasic acid. ⇒  Only  H - atom attached with  ' O '  is ionizable.
