MHT CET Chemistry Question (2026) — Solution

Question

Which of the following on reaction with Grignard's reagent followed by hydrolysis forms tertiary alcohol ?

Options

  1. A. HCHO
  2. B. CH _3 CHO
  3. C. CH _3 -CH _2 -CHO
  4. D. CH _3 - CO - CH _3

Answer

D. CH _3 - CO - CH _3

Step-by-step solution

Grignard reagents react with carbonyl compounds to form addition products which on hydrolysis yield alcohols. Formaldehyde ( HCHO ) reacts with Grignard reagents to form primary alcohols. Other aldehydes (such as CH _3 CHO and CH _3 -CH _2 -CHO ) react with Grignard reagents to form secondary alcohols. Ketones (such as CH _3 - CO - CH _3) react with Grignard reagents to form tertiary alcohols. The reaction proceeds as follows: CH _3 - CO - CH _3 + RMgX CH _3 - C ( R )( OMgX ) - CH _3 CH _3 - C ( R )( OMgX ) - CH _3 + H _2 O CH _3 - C ( R )( OH ) - CH _3 + Mg ( OH ) X The final product is a tertiary alcohol. Answer: CH _3 - CO - CH _3
