MHT CET Chemistry Question (2026) — Solution

Question

The major product 'B' in the below mentioned reaction is-

Options

  1. A. Bromoethane
  2. B. 1-Bromopropane
  3. C. 2-Bromopropane
  4. D. Carbontetrabromide

Answer

C. 2-Bromopropane

Step-by-step solution

The given reactant is 2-bromopropane ( CH _3- CH ( Br )- CH _3). When 2-bromopropane is treated with alcoholic KOH and heated, it undergoes dehydrohalogenation ( -elimination) to form propene (A). CH _3- CH ( Br )- CH _3 Alc. KOH, CH _3- CH = CH _2 Next, propene (A) reacts with HBr in the absence of peroxide. This is an electrophilic addition reaction that follows Markovnikov's rule. The negative part of the addendum ( Br ^-) attaches to the carbon atom of the double bond that has fewer hydrogen atoms. CH _3- CH = CH _2 + HBr Peroxide absent CH _3- CH ( Br )- CH _3 Thus, the major product 'B' is 2-bromopropane. Answer: 2-Bromopropane
