Ozone depletion is caused by a number of pollutants like chlorofluorocarbons (14 % of total depletion), nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, CCl ₄, Cl ₂ etc. Maximum ozone depleting potential or OPD is of chlorofluorocarbons ( CF ₂ Cl ₂ ) due to release of chlorine by it. A single chlorine atom converts 1 lakh molecules of ozone to oxygen.
