Heparin is a proteoglycan. It is an anticoagulant. Heparin prevents coagulation of blood in blood vessels, ie, in vivo condition. It is mainly synthesised in liver and in small amount from mast cells of connective tissues. Other anticoagulants are sodium citrate and EDTA. They inhibit blood coagulation outside blood vessels, ie, in vitro condition like blood banks.
