What is acrosomal reaction?

Options

  1. AContact of sperms with eggs
  2. BDigestion of zona pellucida
  3. CDisintegration of acrosome
  4. DContact of acrosome and nucleus of egg

Correct answer

B. Digestion of zona pellucida

Step-by-step solution

Acrosomal reaction is digestion of zona pellucida. This involves the progressive fusion of the acrosomal membrane with the plasma membrane of the sperm. It creates pores through which the acrosomal enzymes can be released by exocytosis. These enzymes include a protein digesting enzyme, corona penetrating enzyme, zona lysin (acrosin) and hyaluronidase. These enzymes allow the sperm to digest a path through the zona pellucida to the oocyte.
