What is the main advantage of using PCR in DNA fingerprinting?
Options
- AIt allows for the detection of VNTRs with greater sensitivity.
- BIt enables the isolation of DNA from a wider variety of sources.
- CIt reduces the number of steps required for DNA fingerprinting.
- DIt eliminates the need for the use of a VNTR probe.
Correct answer
A. It allows for the detection of VNTRs with greater sensitivity.
Step-by-step solution
These bands give a characteristic pattern for an individual DNA (Figure 5.16). It differs from individual to individual in a population except in the case of monozygotic (identical) twins. The sensitivity of the technique has been increased by use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR – you will study about it in Chapter 9). Consequently, DNA from a single cell is enough to perform DNA fingerprinting analysis. In addition to application in forensic science, it has much wider application, such as in determining populati
