The aromatic alcohols are those compounds in which the hydroxyl group is not directly attached to the nucleus but is linked to a carbon atom situated in a side-chain. The compound - I and compound - II are the phenols, these are not the aromatic alcohols as - OH group is directly attached to benzene ring. The compounds II   and   III are benzyl alcohols and these are aromatic alcohols as - OH group is attached to the carbon atom which itself attached to benzene ring.
