A beaker of radius r is filled with water (refractive index(4)/(3))...

A beaker of radius rr is filled with water(refractive index43)\left(\text{refractive index}\dfrac{4}{3}\right) up to a height HH as shown in the figure on the left. The beaker is kept on a horizontal table rotating with angular speed ω\omega. This makes the water surface curved so that the difference in the height of water level at the centre and at the circumference of the beaker is h(h≪H,h≪r)h\left(h ≪ H\text{,}h ≪ r\right), as shown in the figure on the right. Take this surface to be approximately spherical with a radius of curvature R.R . Which of the following is/are correct? (gg is the acceleration due to gravity)

A beaker of radius r is filled with water (refractive index(4)/(3)) up to a height H as shown in the figure on the

Options

  1. AR=h2+r22hR = \dfrac{{h}^{2} + {r}^{2}}{2h}
  2. BR=3r22hR = \dfrac{3{r}^{2}}{2h}
  3. CApparent depth of the bottom of the beaker is close to 3H2(1+ω2H2g)−1\dfrac{3H}{2}{\left(1 + \dfrac{{\omega}^{2}H}{2g}\right)}^{- 1}
  4. DApparent depth of the bottom of the beaker is close to 3H4(1+ω2H4g)−1\dfrac{3H}{4}{\left(1 + \dfrac{{\omega}^{2}H}{4g}\right)}^{- 1}

Correct answer

A. R=h2+r22hR = \dfrac{{h}^{2} + {r}^{2}}{2h}

Step-by-step solution

A beaker of radius r is filled with water (refractive index(4)/(3)) up to a height H as shown in the figure on the

h=ω2r22gh = \dfrac{{\omega}^{2}{r}^{2}}{2g}

r2+(R−h)2=R2{r}^{2} + ( R - h{)}^{2} = {R}^{2}

r2=R2−(R−h)2=(2R−h)h{r}^{2} = {R}^{2} - ( R - h{)}^{2} = ( 2R - h ) h

r2=2Rh−h2{r}^{2} = 2Rh - {h}^{2}

∴R=r2+h22h∴ R = \dfrac{{r}^{2} + {h}^{2}}{2h}       ......option (A)

For apparent depth, now

Asr≪h\text{As}r ≪ h,

R=r22h=gω2R = \dfrac{{r}^{2}}{2h} = \dfrac{g}{{\omega}^{2}}

Refraction formula,

1v−43(H−h)=1−4/3R\dfrac{1}{v} - \dfrac{4}{3 ( H - h )} = \dfrac{1 - 4 / 3}{R}

\left|\dfrac{1}{v}\right| = \dfrac{1}{3R} + \dfrac{4}{3 ( H - h )}</p><p>Since</p><p>SinceH ≫ h,</p><p>∣1v∣=ω23g+43H=43H[1+3H4×ω23g],</p><p>\left|\dfrac{1}{v}\right| = \dfrac{{\omega}^{2}}{3g} + \dfrac{4}{3H} = \dfrac{4}{3H}\left[1 + \dfrac{3H}{4} \times \dfrac{{\omega}^{2}}{3g}\right]

⇒∣v∣=3H4[1+ω2H4g]−1⇒ | v | = \dfrac{3H}{4}{\left[1 + \dfrac{{\omega}^{2}H}{4g}\right]}^{- 1}        .......option (D)
