Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : Aqueous solution of ammonium carbonate is basic. Statement (II) : Acidic/basic nature of salt solution of a salt of weak acid and weak base depends on K a and K b value of acid and the base forming it. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

Options

  1. ABoth Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. BStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  3. CBoth Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. DStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Correct answer

A. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct

Step-by-step solution

Aqueous solution of ( NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 is Basic. pH of salt of weak acid and weak base depends on K a and K b value of acid and the base forming it. Solution is basic if K b (weak base) > K a (weak acid). K a ( HCO 3 - )= 4 . 3 × 10 − 13 K b ( NH 4 OH ) = 1 . 8 × 10 − 5 K b (Ammonium hydroxide) > K a (Hydrogen carbonate) ∴ Hence, solution of Ammonium carbonate is basic in nature. Hence Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
