Under hydrolytic conditions, the compound used for the preparation of linear polymer and for chain termination are ( C H 3 ) 2 SiC l 2 and ( C H 3 ) 3 SiCl respectively. The hydrolysis of dimethyldichlorosilane gives dimethyl silane diol which on condensation polymerization forms a linear polymer. The hydrolysis of trimethylchlorosilane gives trimethyl silanol which can not undergo polymerization as it contains only one -OH group so it is used for chain termination.
