A particle starts from rest and traverses a distance 2x2x with uniform acceleration, then moves uniformly over a further distance 4x4x and finally comes to rest after moving a further distance 6x6x under uniform retardation. Assuming entire motion to be rectilinear motion, the ratio of average speed over the journey to the maximum speed on its way is

Options

  1. A45\dfrac{4}{5}
  2. B35\dfrac{3}{5}
  3. C25\dfrac{2}{5}
  4. D15\dfrac{1}{5}

Correct answer

B. 35\dfrac{3}{5}

Step-by-step solution

Let t1{t}_{1},t2{t}_{2} and t3{t}_{3} be the time taken by the particles to cover the distance 2x2x, 4x4x and 6x6x respectively. Let vv be the velocity of the particle at BB i.e, maximum velocity. The particle moves with uniform acceleration from AA to BB.

For motion from AA to BB.

Average velocity =0+v2=v2= \dfrac{0 + v}{2} = \dfrac{v}{2}

Time taken, t1=2xv2{t}_{1} = \dfrac{2x}{\dfrac{v}{2}}

Particle moves with uniform retardation from CC TO DD, Vavg=0+v2=v2{V}_{avg} = \dfrac{0 + v}{2} = \dfrac{v}{2}

Time taken ,t3=6x(v2){t}_{3} = \dfrac{6x}{( \dfrac{v}{2} )}

Total time = t1+t2+t3{t}_{1} + {t}_{2} + {t}_{3}

t=2xv2+4xv+6xv2=20xvt = \dfrac{2x}{v2} + \dfrac{4x}{v} + \dfrac{6x}{v2} = \dfrac{20x}{v}

Average Velocity over= 6x+2x+4x20xv=35v\dfrac{6x + 2x + 4x}{20xv} = \dfrac{3}{5}v
Required Ratio =& AverageSpeedv=35\dfrac{Average Speed}{v} = \dfrac{3}{5}
