In Kreb's cycle, the conversion of oxalosuccinate into α - ketoglutarate involves ________ reaction.
Options
- AOxidation
- BReduction
- CHydration
- DDecarboxylation
Correct answer
D. Decarboxylation
Step-by-step solution
During Kreb's cycle, the oxalosuccinic acid loses a molecule of CO 2 (decarboxylation) and as a result, α-ketoglutaric acid (5-carbon compound) is produced (one carbon atom has been removed in the form of CO 2 ). In the presence of CoA, NAD+ and enzyme dehydrogenase, α-ketoglutaric acid is converted into Succinyl CoA (4-carbon) and one carbon is lost in the form of CO 2 . NAD+ is reduced to NADH.
