A leaf peeling of Tradescantia is kept in a medium having 10% NaCl. After a few minutes, if we observe the leaf peel under the microscope, we are likely to see

Options

  1. AEntry of water into the cell
  2. BThe cells bursting out
  3. CDiffusion of NaCl into the cell
  4. DExit of water from the cell

Correct answer

D. Exit of water from the cell

Step-by-step solution

When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution then exosmosis occurs. Due to exosmosis, the protoplasm shrinks and leaves the cell wall and thus becomes flaccid, which is called plasmolysis. Thus, exosmosis leads to plasmolysis. Since 10% NaCl solution is a hypertonic solution as compared to cell sap exosmosis, i.e., movement of water from inside to outside the cell will occur.
