The curve given below shows enzymatic activity with relation to three conditions (pH, temperature and substrate concentration). What does the two axis (x and y) represent?

Options

  1. AX-axis: Enzymatic activity, Y-axis: pH
  2. BX-axis: Temperature, Y-axis: Enzyme activity
  3. CX-axis: Substrate concentration, Y-axis: Enzymatic activity
  4. DX-axis: Enzymatic activity, Y-axis: Temperature

Correct answer

B. X-axis: Temperature, Y-axis: Enzyme activity

Step-by-step solution

In the given curve the temperature and enzyme activity relation is shown. Enzymes generally function in a narrow range of temperatures. Each enzyme shows its highest activity at a particular temperature called the optimum temperature. Activity declines both below and above the optimum value. Low temperature preserves the enzyme in a temporarily inactive state whereas high temperature destroys enzymatic activity because proteins are denatured by heat.
