From the following, the statement/s that will help to determine the specificity of an enzyme is/are: I. The bonding between R groups of amino acids of the polypeptide II. The optimum pH of the enzyme III. The peptide bonds between amino acids of the polypeptide IV. The shape of the substrate molecule

Options

  1. AI, II, III and IV
  2. BI and III only
  3. CI only
  4. DII, III and IV only

Correct answer

C. I only

Step-by-step solution

The enzyme is generally made of proteins and proteins are made of amino acids. The amino acids have R as a functional group whose variation results in formation of different amino acids. Due to the R group, the bonding of the polypeptide chain in enzyme will differ resulting in formation of various folds and bends in its tertiary structure enabling the making of substrate binding site which is highly specific.
