NEETChemistryClassification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties

The correct statements with respect to halides of group 14 elements are I. Both CCl ₄ and SiCl ₄ undergo hydrolysis II. GeX ₄ is more stable than GeX ₂ III. PbX ₄ is less stable than PbX ₂ IV. Stability of dihalides decreases down the group.

Options

  1. AI, IV only
  2. BII, IV only
  3. CII, III only
  4. DIII, IV only

Correct answer

C. II, III only

Step-by-step solution

CCl ₄ does not undergo hydrolysis since C does not have 'd' orbital to accept the electrons from donor. (I) is incorrect. GP. 14 elements have 4 electrons in their valence shells. So, (+4) and (+2) are the common oxidate states (O.S.) for C to Pb . However, the stability of (+4) O.S. decreases from Ge to Pb ( Ge < Sn < Pb ) due to inert pair effect. Therefore, Ge forms stable compound in (+4) O.S. and Pb in (+2) O.S. (II) & (III) are correct. Stability of dihalides increases down the group. (IV) is incorrect.
