The final step for extraction of copper from copper pyrite in bessemer converter involves the reaction

Options

  1. ACu 2   S + 2 Cu 2 O ⟶ 6 Cu + SO 2
  2. B4 Cu 2 O + FeS ⟶ 8 Cu + FeSO 4
  3. C2 Cu 2 O + FeS ⟶ 4 Cu + Fe + SO 2
  4. DCu 2   S + 2 FeO ⟶ 2 Cu + Fe + SO 2

Correct answer

A. Cu 2   S + 2 Cu 2 O ⟶ 6 Cu + SO 2

Step-by-step solution

In Bessemer converter, copper-sulphide is partially oxidised to cuprous oxide, which further reacts with the remaining copper sulphide to give copper and sulphur di oxide, i.e. Cu 2   S + 2 Cu 2 O ⟶ 6 Cu + SO 2 This reaction represents auto reduction. Cu 2 O reacts with Cu 2 S to give copper metal. The solid metal obtained is called as blister copper and is about 99% pure.
