An extended object is placed at point OO, 10cm10cm in front of a convex lens L1{L}_{1} and a concave lens L2{L}_{2} is placed 10cm10cm behind it, as shown in the figure. The radii of curvature of all the curved surfaces in both the lenses are 20cm20cm. The refractive index of both the lenses is 1.51 . 5. The total magnification of this lens system is:

An extended object is placed at point O , 10cm in front of a convex lens L _ 1 and a concave lens L _ 2 is placed 10cm

Options

  1. A0.40 . 4
  2. B0.80 . 8
  3. C1.31 . 3
  4. D1.61 . 6

Correct answer

B. 0.80 . 8

Step-by-step solution

For convex lens,

1f=(μ2μ1−1)(1R1−1R2)⇒1f1=(32−1)(120−1−20)\dfrac{1}{f} = \left(\dfrac{{\mu}_{2}}{{\mu}_{1}} - 1\right)\left(\dfrac{1}{{R}_{1}} - \dfrac{1}{{R}_{2}}\right) ⇒ \dfrac{1}{{f}_{1}} = \left(\dfrac{3}{2} - 1\right)\left(\dfrac{1}{20} - \dfrac{1}{- 20}\right)

⇒f1=+20cm⇒ {f}_{1} = + 20cm

Now, image distance from convex,

vconvex=uf1u+f1=(−10)×20−10+20{v}_{convex} = \dfrac{u{f}_{1}}{u + {f}_{1}} = \dfrac{\left(- 10\right) \times 20}{- 10 + 20}

⇒vconvex=−20cm⇒ {v}_{convex} = - 20cm

This location of image will be object location for concave lens.

Therefore, uconcave=−30cm{u}_{concave} = - 30cm

For concave lens,

1f2=(32−1)(1−20−120)\dfrac{1}{{f}_{2}} = \left(\dfrac{3}{2} - 1\right)\left(\dfrac{1}{- 20} - \dfrac{1}{20}\right)

⇒f2=−20cm⇒ {f}_{2} = - 20cm

Now, distance of image from concave,

vconcave=(−30)×(−20)−30−20{v}_{concave} = \dfrac{\left(- 30\right) \times \left(- 20\right)}{- 30 - 20}=−12cm= - 12cm

Now, m=mconvex×mconcavem = {m}_{convex} \times {m}_{concave}

m=(−20)(−10)×(−12)(−30)m = \dfrac{\left(- 20\right)}{\left(- 10\right)} \times \dfrac{\left(- 12\right)}{\left(- 30\right)}=0.8= 0 . 8
