A block of mass is positioned on a horizontal table. If the static friction coefficient is , determine the frictional force acting on the block.
Options
- A
- B
- C
- D
Correct answer
C.
Step-by-step solution
The block is placed on a horizontal table and no external horizontal force is applied to it.
Frictional force comes into play only when there is relative motion or a tendency of relative motion between the surfaces in contact.
Since the applied horizontal force is zero, the tendency of relative motion is zero.
Therefore, the static frictional force acting on the block is .
