The speed of earth's rotation about its axis is ω . Its speed is...

The speed of earth's rotation about its axis is ω\omega. Its speed is increased to xx times to make the effective acceleration due to gravity equal to zero at the equator. Then xx is

Options

  1. A11
  2. B8.58.5
  3. C1717
  4. D3434

Correct answer

C. 1717

Step-by-step solution

Earth rotates about its own axis in 24 h . So, T=24×60×60 s\quad T=24 \times 60 \times 60 \mathrm{~s} So, angular speed of earth about its own axis ω=2πT=2π24×60×60rad/s\omega=\frac{2 \pi}{T}=\frac{2 \pi}{24 \times 60 \times 60} \mathrm{rad} / \mathrm{s} At equator, g′=g−Reω′2g^{\prime}=g-R_e \omega^{\prime 2} or 0=g−Reω′2\quad 0=g-R_e \omega^{\prime 2} or ω′=gRe=2π84.6×60\omega^{\prime}=\sqrt{\frac{g}{R_e}}=\frac{2 \pi}{84.6 \times 60} ∴ω′ω=24×60×6084.6×60≈17\therefore \quad \frac{\omega^{\prime}}{\omega}=\frac{24 \times 60 \times 60}{84.6 \times 60} \approx 17 ⇒ω′=17ω\Rightarrow \quad \omega^{\prime}=17 \omega So, value of xx is 17 .
