Which of the following statement(s) is (are) correct? (i) LiF is less soluble in water (ii) NaCl is less ionic than CsCl (iii) Formation of alkali metal halide is an endothermic reaction

Options

  1. Ai & ii only
  2. Bi, ii & iii
  3. Cii & iii only
  4. Di only

Correct answer

A. i & ii only

Step-by-step solution

LiF being predominantly covalent, has a high lattice enthalpy due to which it is less soluble in water. Thus, (i) is correct. Na ⁺ < Cs ⁺ so the polarizing power of Na ⁺ is higher than that of Cs ⁺ which results in NaCl being more covalent or less ionic than CsCl . Thus, (ii) is also correct. Formation of alkali metal halides like NaCl , CsCl , KF , etc. is an exothermic reaction which gives rise to a stable crystal lattice. Thus, (iii) is incorrect.
