Which of the following statements is INCORRECT about ecological pyramids?
Options
- AAll pyramids are always upright
- BThey represent trophic structure and function.
- CEnergy pyramids are always upright
- DIn aquatic ecosystem, the biomass pyramid may be inverted
Correct answer
A. All pyramids are always upright
Step-by-step solution
Ecological pyramids represent the trophic structure and function of an ecosystem.
The pyramid of energy is always upright because energy flow is unidirectional and energy decreases at each successive trophic level due to heat loss (10% law).
The pyramid of biomass in an aquatic ecosystem is generally inverted because the biomass of phytoplankton (producers) is lower than that of zooplankton and fishes (consumers).
The pyramid of numbers can also be inverted, for example, in a tree ecosystem where a single tree supports many insects.
Therefore, the statement that all pyramids are always upright is incorrect.
