NEET2022ChemistryAminesActual

Given below are two statements: Statement I: Primary aliphatic amines react with HNO 2 to give unstable diazonium salts. Statement II : Primary aromatic amines react with HNO 2 to form diazonium salts which are stable even above 300   K . In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below

Options

  1. ABoth Statements I and Statement II are is incorrect.
  2. BStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
  3. CStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
  4. DBoth Statement I and Statement II are correct.

Correct answer

B. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.

Step-by-step solution

When primary aliphatic amines react with HNO 2 then unstable diazonium salt, which result in the formation of alcohol and N 2 gas. And when primary aromatic amines react with HNO 2 the diazonium salts formed are stable due to resonance stabilisation of the aromatic ring of aryl diazoniun salts. But these are stable only at 273-277 K, at higher temperatures they are unstable. Hence, Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
