Cathode rays of velocity 10 ^ 6 ^ -1 describe an approximately...

Cathode rays of velocity {10}^{6}\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm\mathrm{ms}^{-1} describe an approximately circular path of radius 1 m in an electric field 300Vm−1.300{Vm}^{- 1}. If the velocity of cathode rays are doubled. The value of electric field so that the rays describe the same circular path, will be

Options

  1. A2400Vm−12400{Vm}^{- 1}
  2. B600Vm−1600{Vm}^{- 1}
  3. C1200Vm−11200{Vm}^{- 1}
  4. D12000Vm−112000Vm^{- 1}

Correct answer

C. 1200Vm−11200{Vm}^{- 1}

Step-by-step solution

Cathode rays are composed of electrons, when they move in electric field a force

F=eEF = eE...(i)

Acts on them, this provides the necessary centripetal force to the particles

F=mv2rF = \dfrac{mv^{2}}{r}...(ii)

From Eqs. (i) and (ii), we get

eE=mv2reE = \dfrac{mv^{2}}{r}

⇒r=mv2eE=m(106)2e(300)⇒ r = \dfrac{mv^{2}}{eE} = \dfrac{m{\left({10}^{6}\right)}^{2}}{e ( 300 )}...(iii)

When velocity is doubled same circular path is followed, hence radius is same

r=m(2×106)2eEr = \dfrac{m{\left(2 \times {10}^{6}\right)}^{2}}{eE}...(iv)

Equating Eqs. (iii) and (iv), we get

m×(106)2300e=m×(2×106)2eEm \times \dfrac{{\left({10}^{6}\right)}^{2}}{300e} = \dfrac{m \times {\left(2 \times {10}^{6}\right)}^{2}}{eE}

⇒E=300×4=1200⇒ E = 300 \times 4 = 1200 V cm−1cm^{- 1}
