To observe the effect of concentration on the conductivity of electrolytes of different nature were taken in two vessels (A ) and (B . A ) contains weak electrolyte ( NH ₄ OH ) and (B ) contains strong electrolyte ( NaCl ). In both containers, concentration of respective electrolyte was increased and conductivity observed

Options

  1. Ain (A ) conductivity increases, in (B ) conductivity decreases
  2. Bin (A ) conductivity decreases, while in (B ) conductivity increases
  3. Cin both (A ) and (B ) conductivity increase
  4. Din both (A ) and (B ) conductivity decreases.

Correct answer

D. in both (A ) and (B ) conductivity decreases.

Step-by-step solution

Solution which contains large number of ions compared to another solution of same concentration at the same temperature has more conductance and is said to be stronger electrolyte. The one which has relatively small number of ions is called weak electrolyte. If concentration of respective electrolyte was increased, the equivalent conductance decreased in each case, but rapid decrease in equivalent conductance is seen in weak electrolyte.
