Method used for separation of mixture of products (B and C) obtained in the following reaction is

Options

  1. Asteam distillation
  2. Bsimple distillation
  3. Csublimation
  4. Dfractional distillation

Correct answer

D. fractional distillation

Step-by-step solution

Benzene reacts with Br2\text{Br}_2 in the presence of FeBr3\text{FeBr}_3 (Friedel-Crafts halogenation) to give bromobenzene.

Bromobenzene on nitration with HNO3/H2SO4\text{HNO}_3 / \text{H}_2\text{SO}_4 gives a mixture of ortho-bromonitrobenzene and para-bromonitrobenzene (since −Br-\text{Br} is an ortho/para director).

The two products (B and C) are separated by fractional distillation method due to their different boiling points.
