Water flows through two identical tubes AA and BB. In a specified time interval, a volume V0V_0 of water passes through tube AA while 2V02V_0 passes through tube BB. Which of the following statements may be correct?

Options

  1. AThe flow is turbulent in both the tubes.
  2. BThe flow is steady in BB but turbulent in AA.
  3. CThe flow is steady in both the tubes.
  4. DThe flow is steady in AA but turbulent in BB.

Correct answer

D. The flow is steady in AA but turbulent in BB.

Step-by-step solution

Let the cross-sectional area of the identical tubes be AA and the specified time interval be Δt\Delta t.

The volume flow rate in tube AA is QA=V0Δt=AvAQ_A = \dfrac{V_0}{\Delta t} = A v_A, where vAv_A is the velocity of water in tube AA.

The volume flow rate in tube BB is QB=2V0Δt=AvBQ_B = \dfrac{2V_0}{\Delta t} = A v_B, where vBv_B is the velocity of water in tube BB.

From the above equations, we get vB=2vAv_B = 2v_A.

The nature of the flow is determined by the Reynolds number, Re=ρvDηR_e = \dfrac{\rho v D}{\eta}. Since the tubes and the fluid are identical, Re∝vR_e \propto v.

Therefore, Re,B=2Re,AR_{e,B} = 2R_{e,A}.

For steady (streamline) flow, Re<2000R_e < 2000, and for turbulent flow, Re>3000R_e > 3000.

If Re,A=800R_{e,A} = 800, then Re,B=1600R_{e,B} = 1600. Both are less than 20002000, so the flow can be steady in both tubes.

If Re,A=4000R_{e,A} = 4000, then Re,B=8000R_{e,B} = 8000. Both are greater than 30003000, so the flow can be turbulent in both tubes.

If Re,A=1800R_{e,A} = 1800, then Re,B=3600R_{e,B} = 3600. Here Re,A<2000R_{e,A} < 2000 and Re,B>3000R_{e,B} > 3000, so the flow can be steady in AA and turbulent in BB.

If the flow in AA is turbulent (Re,A>3000R_{e,A} > 3000), then Re,B>6000R_{e,B} > 6000, meaning the flow in BB must also be turbulent. Thus, it is impossible for the flow to be steady in BB while being turbulent in AA.
