Which of the following statements is NOT true about 0.05 M urea solution & 0.1 M glucose solution?

Options

  1. AThe osmotic pressure exhibited by the glucose solution is higher than that exhibited by the urea solution.
  2. BThe glucose solution is hypertonic to urea solution.
  3. CThese two solutions are isotonic solutions.
  4. DThe urea solution is hypotonic to glucose solution.

Correct answer

C. These two solutions are isotonic solutions.

Step-by-step solution

Osmotic pressure is given by = iCRT . For urea and glucose, the van't Hoff factor i = 1 . For 0.05 M urea solution, _ urea = 0.05 RT . For 0.1 M glucose solution, _ glucose = 0.1 RT . Since _ glucose > _ urea , the glucose solution has a higher osmotic pressure and is hypertonic to the urea solution. The urea solution is hypotonic to the glucose solution. Since their osmotic pressures are different, they are not isotonic solutions. Answer: These two solutions are isotonic solutions.
