Some energy levels of a molecule are shown in the figure with their wavelengths of transitions. Then: Some energy levels of a molecule are shown in the figure with their wavelengths of transitions. Then:

Options

  1. Aλ3>λ2,λ1=2λ2\lambda_3\gt\lambda_2, \lambda_1=2 \lambda_2
  2. Bλ3>λ2,λ1=4λ2\lambda_3\gt\lambda_2, \lambda_1=4 \lambda_2
  3. Cλ1>λ2,λ2=2λ3\lambda_1\gt\lambda_2, \lambda_2=2 \lambda_3
  4. Dλ2>λ1,λ2=2λ3\lambda_2\gt\lambda_1, \lambda_2=2 \lambda_3

Correct answer

D. λ2>λ1,λ2=2λ3\lambda_2\gt\lambda_1, \lambda_2=2 \lambda_3

Step-by-step solution

hcλ1=−5E2+4E=32Eh \frac{c}{\lambda_1}=\frac{-5 E}{2}+4 E=\frac{3}{2} E...(i) hcλ2=−2E+3E=Eh \frac{c}{\lambda_2}=-2 E+3 E=E...(ii) hCλ3=−2E+4E=2Eh \frac{C}{\lambda_3}=-2 E+4 E=2 E...(iii) Comparing (2) and (3) 1λ3=2λ2λ2=2λ3\frac{1}{\lambda_3}=\frac{2}{\lambda_2} \quad \lambda_2=2 \lambda_3 Comparing (1) and (2) 3λ1=2λ2λ1<λ23 \lambda_1=2 \lambda_2 \quad \lambda_1 \lt \lambda_2
