NEET2019ChemistryAlcohols Phenols and EthersActual

The major products C and D formed in the following reactions respectively are H ₃ C - CH ₂- CH ₂- OC ( CH ₃ )₃ Excess HII C + D

Options

  1. AH ₃ C - CH ₂- CH ₂- and L - C ( CH ₃ )₃
  2. BH ₃ C - CH ₂- CH ₂- OH and I - C ( CH ₃ )₃
  3. CH ₃ C - CH ₂- CH ₂- l and HO - C ^2 ( CH ₃ )₃
  4. DH ₃ C - CH ₂- CH ₂- OH and HO - C ( CH ₃ )₃

Correct answer

A. H ₃ C - CH ₂- CH ₂- and L - C ( CH ₃ )₃

Step-by-step solution

Ethers are readily cleaved by heating in presence of halogen acids to form alcohol and an alkyl halide. In case of unsymmetrical ethers, halogen goes preferentially with smaller alkyl group or more stable carbocation. If excess of acid is used then only alkyl halide is formed because alcohol formed reacts further with halogen acid to form corresponding alkyl halide.
