NEET2006ChemistryAlcohols Phenols and EthersActual

The major organic product in the reaction, CH ₃- O - CH ( CH ₃ )₂+ HI products is:

Options

  1. ACH ₃ I + ( CH ₃ )₂ CHOH
  2. BCH ₃ OH + ( CH ₃ )₂ CHI
  3. CICH ₂ OCH ( CH ₃ )₂
  4. D( array c CH ₃ OC ( CH ₃ )₂ | I array )

Correct answer

A. CH ₃ I + ( CH ₃ )₂ CHOH

Step-by-step solution

In the case of an unsymmetrical ether, the alkyl halide is always formed from the smaller alkyl group. This happens because the I ⁻ ion being larger in sizc approaches the smaller alkyl group to avoid steric hindrance. Caution H I is an acid and when it is hot and concentrated it means we are having an excess of HI . Iodide ion produced from HI in this reaction will act as a nucleophile.
