Paragraph: X\mathbf{X} and Y\mathbf{Y} are two volatile liquids with molar weights of 10 g mol−110 \mathrm{~g} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1} and 40 g mol−140 \mathrm{~g} \mathrm{~mol}^{-1} respectively. Two cotton plugs, one soaked in X\mathbf{X} and the other soaked in Y\mathbf{Y}, are simultaneously placed at the ends of a tube of length L=24 cmL=24 \mathrm{~cm}, as shown in the figure. The tube is filled with an inert gas at 11 atmosphere pressure and a temperature of 300 K300 \mathrm{~K}. Vapours of X\mathbf{X} and Y\mathbf{Y} react to form a product which is first observed at a distance d cm\mathbf{d} \mathrm{~cm} from the plug soaked in X\mathbf{X}. Take X\mathbf{X} and Y\mathbf{Y} to have equal molecular diameters and assume ideal behaviour for the inert gas and the two vapours. Paragraph: X and Y are two volatile liquids with molar weights of 10 ~g ~mol^ -1 and 40 ~g ~mol^ -1 respectively. Two

Question: The value of d\mathbf{d} in cm\mathbf{c m} (shown in the figure), as estimated from Graham's law, is

Options

  1. A8
  2. B12
  3. C16
  4. D20

Correct answer

C. 16

Step-by-step solution

rxry=d24−d=4010=2\dfrac{{r}_{x}}{{r}_{y}} = \dfrac{d}{24 - d} = \sqrt{\dfrac{40}{10}} = 2
d=48−2dd = 48 - 2d
3d=483d = 48
d=16cmd = 16cm
