Given below are two statements. Statement I : O 2 , Cu 2 + and Fe 3 + are weakly attracted by magnetic field and are magnetized in the same direction as magnetic field. Statement II : NaCl and H 2 O are weakly magnetized in opposite direction to magnetic field. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer form the options given below
Options
- ABoth Statement I and Statement II are correct.
- BBoth Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
- CStatement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
- DStatement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
Correct answer
A. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Step-by-step solution
O 2 , Cu 2 + and Fe 3 + all have unpaired electrons so, they are paramagnetic, O 2   has   two   unpaired   electrons   according   to   MOT , Cu 2 +   has   d 9   configuration   so ,   one   unpaired   electron . Fe + 3   has   d 5   configuration   so ,   5   unpaired   electrons . ∴ Weakly attracted by magnetic field. NaCl and H 2 O does not have any unpaired electrons so they are diamagnetic, ∴
