Iodine reacts with concentrated H N O 3 to yield Y along with other products. The oxidation state of iodine in Y , is:

Options

  1. A1
  2. B5
  3. C3
  4. D7

Correct answer

B. 5

Step-by-step solution

I 2 + 10  H N O 3 → 2  H I O 3 + 10  N O 2 + 4  H 2 O Iodine gets oxidized to I O 3 - when it reacts with an oxidizing agent H N O 3 . The oxidation number of I in product will be Oxidation: I 2 − I O 3 − - 1 = x + 3 × - 2 - 1 = x - 6 x = - 1 + 6 = + 5 Reduction: concentrated HNO 3 gives NO 2 .
