The displacement xx of a particle varies with time tt as x=ae−αt+beβtx=a e^{-\alpha t}+b e^{\beta t}, where a,b,αa, b, \alpha and β\beta are positive constants. The velocity of the particle will

Options

  1. Ago on decreasing with time
  2. Bbe independent of α\alpha and β\beta
  3. Cdrop to zero when α=β\alpha=\beta
  4. Dgo on increasing with time

Correct answer

D. go on increasing with time

Step-by-step solution

Given, x=ae−αt+beβtx=a e^{-\alpha t}+b e^{\beta t} So, velocity v=dxdt=−aαe−αt+bβeβt=A+B\begin{aligned} v & =\frac{d x}{d t} \\ & =-a \alpha e^{-\alpha t}+b \beta e^{\beta t} \\ & =A+B\end{aligned} Where, A=−aαe−αt,B=bβeβtA=-a \alpha e^{-\alpha t}, B=b \beta e^{\beta t} The value of term A=−aαe−αtA=-a \alpha e^{-\alpha t} decreases and of term B=bβeβtB=b \beta e^{\beta t} increases with increase in time. As a result, velocity goes on increasing with time.
